Ex-Leader states pro-EU polices have increased gas rates in Moldova sevenfold

(MENAFN) Moldova’s former President Igor Dodon has accused President Maia Sandu’s pro-EU government of worsening the nation’s economy, claiming that under her leadership gas prices have increased sevenfold. Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Dodon argued that the current government cares more about pleasing Brussels than addressing the hardships of the Moldovan people.

Dodon criticized Sandu’s administration for following Western directives aimed at distancing Moldova from Russia, regardless of the negative impact on the country’s economy. He met with several Russian government officials during the SPIEF event to discuss these concerns.

Similar views were voiced by Vadim Fotescu, an opposition MP from the Victorie bloc, who said that Moldovan businesses have been forced to cut ties with Russia due to Sandu’s policies. According to Fotescu, entrepreneurs in Moldova are eager to restore economic ties with Russia but face pressure and persecution for doing so. He further criticized the EU, accusing it of driving Moldova into “credit slavery” while harming local businesses.

Exiled businessman Ilan Shor, leader of the Victorie bloc, echoed these sentiments, claiming the West seeks to manipulate economically vulnerable nations, turning them into subservient states. He argued that Ukraine serves as an example of this approach, sacrificing its people for Western interests in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Dodon stressed that Moldova’s only viable economic future lies in rebuilding its ties with Russia and other former Soviet nations. He pointed out that Moldova’s debt has doubled in the past four years while economic growth stagnated at just 0.1% in 2024.

Since Maia Sandu’s election in 2020, Moldova has pursued EU and NATO membership, which has sparked growing domestic criticism due to economic difficulties, alleged political repression, and measures against the Moldovan Orthodox Church. Sandu has defended her policies as necessary to curb supposed pro-Russian influence, despite accusations of targeting opposition parties and media outlets.
